Everyone needs different forms of entertainment now and then to take a break from our hectic work schedule. There are many forms of entertainment to choose from. Some choose to watch movies, some choose to play online games, and some simply choose to be self entertained with a good old game of poker.

Poker is a card game that almost anyone can pick up in a matter of hours. The basic rules are simple to learn. Each player will be dealt with two cards at the start of the game. On the table, there will be a pool of money, where all players contribute an agreed some of money. For the two cards, one will be revealed to all the players, while the other one remains hidden until the end of the game. This is the card that makes the entire game of poker very exciting, for everyone is constantly guessing what the final card will be.

The player with the largest value will get to suggest an amount to be contributed to the pool table. Obviously, the player with the best cards will tend to add more money to the table. It’s then up to the other players to decide whether they wish to continue with the game. If they think that they don’t have a good chance of winning, they may choose to “fold” – which means that they are out of the game. The remaining players continue to play.

This goes on until the fifth and final card is dealt. At the end of each game, those players still remaining in the game will have to reveal their hidden card. The player with the best hand (in the game of poker, the best hand is a royal flush in spades) wins the game, and will collect all the money on the table. The next game starts again.

These are the basic rules of poker. You may have to read up on the different combinations of cards that are acceptable in the game of poker, and also, which hands are the best combinations.

Although everything sounds simply in theory, poker actually requires a lot of skills in real life. For example, a player may choose to bluff. He is able to do so by following all the bets on every turn. Since nobody knows the value of the final card, some players may end up guessing wrongly and choose to “fold”. As the bets get bigger, and higher stakes are involved, poker becomes a highly psychological game. Even the best players find it stressful at times, when having to pit their skills against other skillful players.

Finally, know that poker is simply a game of cards, where anyone can play with family and friends for entertainment. You can practice by yourself if you want, by playing against other players online. Online games can provide hours and hours of free entertainment with zero risk. Start from the basics, and slowly hone your skills. Try to pick up some strategies as you play, and before you know it, you would have become an expert.

Did you know that …

... the first mechanical slot machine was the Liberty Bell, invented in 1895 by car mechanic, Charles Fey (1862-1944) of San Francisco?

The Liberty Bell slot machine had three spinning reels. Diamond, spade, and heart symbols were painted around each reel, plus the image of a cracked Liberty Bell. A spin resulting in three Liberty Bells in a row gave the biggest payoff, a grand total of fifty cents or ten nickels.

The original Liberty Bell slot machine can still be seen at the Liberty Belle Saloon & Restaurant in Reno, Nevada.
