Before engaging in an online play poker, let us give you a brief introduction to the rules of the game.

Online play poker games are based on land-based poker games. Usually, when you say poker, you always think of Texas Hold’em, one of many variations of the card game. Texas Hold’em is one of the most popular poker games at online casinos, as well as in land-based casinos. However, many variations of poker exist whether in real casino or in online play poker rooms.

Most poker variations, if not all, involve betting (it just fun when there is responsible wagering involved) and all these poker variations share basic poker rules. It is the same for online play poker games and land-based poker – the rules are basically similar.

The basic concept of poker is putting your money on the pot based on the strength of your hand. All online play poker games and real life poker have the pot money feature which all bets go into. The player who gets the pot is the person with the strongest hand or the person who has the will not to fold just when everyone from the table has given up their hands.

Online play poker games and its counterparts always feature a mandatory wager of some kind. This is called the ante in a stud and draw poker game. It is wagered in every hand.

In a Texas Holdem game, you have what is dubbed as the ‘blind’ and is wagered when a gamer turns to the post “blinded.’

All variations of poker, whether it is an online play poker game or land-based, have the following betting choices: betting, folding, checking, calling and raising.

Checking – A poker gamer who has not placed a wager prior to his action has the choice of checking. This means he can stay in the hand without wagering his money. The player who is clockwise from the player who has chosen ‘check’ acts. If all the poker players state that they’ve checked, no money will be added to the pot.

When you say ‘fold,’ this means that the player has given up the chance to get the total cash pot, but it also signifies that he does not need to add money to the pot. When a player folds, he loses his turn until the next poker hand given by the dealer.

When a player calls, he just states that he is confident with his hand and is willing to put the same money as the competing player. When a bet is ‘called’ and it is the final betting round, then the person who bet first has to reveal his hand to the player who made a ‘call.’

Raising a bet means the player puts more money in the pot and the player who made the original bet has to add more so that he can stay in the game. The original bettor can choose to fold and the player who made a raise (in the final round) is the winner of the pot.

Did you know that …

... the first mechanical slot machine was the Liberty Bell, invented in 1895 by car mechanic, Charles Fey (1862-1944) of San Francisco?

The Liberty Bell slot machine had three spinning reels. Diamond, spade, and heart symbols were painted around each reel, plus the image of a cracked Liberty Bell. A spin resulting in three Liberty Bells in a row gave the biggest payoff, a grand total of fifty cents or ten nickels.

The original Liberty Bell slot machine can still be seen at the Liberty Belle Saloon & Restaurant in Reno, Nevada.
