Annie Duke is a leading poker professional who was born in 1965 in New Hampshire. No doubt there is poker in her genes as her brother Howard is a poker pro and her sister Katy has authored a book called poker Face.

Annie’s education was pretty much perfect for her future career, and included English and Psychology and Psycholinguistics in which she obtained a PhD; all very useful when seated at the poker table.

Her poker career started in Montana and her brother was her teacher. She moved to Las Vegas In 1994 where she became a full time professional. She has certainly achieved some success in the game. Her largest win was $2 million in the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions. This was the first of the series and was a winner takes all event held at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. Annie played against nine of the other top names on the scene. Annie won her two million whilst the other placers did not receive a cent. The rules of the tournament were subsequently changes and now the top prize is a mere $1,000,000 with another million being distributed amongst the next eight players.

Annie does not believe in Women only poker events and sees no reason to hold them. She believes that women are every bit as good as men at poker and are quite able to compete on equal terms. Her total winnings to date are around four million dollars.

Apart from poker, like her sister she is a writer and a lecturer. Her autobiography has the amusing title, ‘How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed, and Won Millions at The World Series of Poker’ which was in fact part autobiography and part poker manual. She has also published a DVD called ‘Annie Duke’s Advanced Texas Hold ‘Em Secrets – How to Beat the Big Boys’. In this she talks about reading and profiling players, which is one of her top skills no doubt assisted by her education. Be careful when you next sit down to play poker with a Doctor of Psychology, she is probably counting your blink rate.

Did you know that …

... the first mechanical slot machine was the Liberty Bell, invented in 1895 by car mechanic, Charles Fey (1862-1944) of San Francisco?

The Liberty Bell slot machine had three spinning reels. Diamond, spade, and heart symbols were painted around each reel, plus the image of a cracked Liberty Bell. A spin resulting in three Liberty Bells in a row gave the biggest payoff, a grand total of fifty cents or ten nickels.

The original Liberty Bell slot machine can still be seen at the Liberty Belle Saloon & Restaurant in Reno, Nevada.
