Over the past few years, slot machines have been the source of generating the major revenues of all the games played at casinos in the US. On the other hand slot machines have not always been the major source of revenues of all the casinos in the US. Slots were once upon a time seen as the “wife’s” game, a suitably positioned machine that was used to provide entertainment to the spouse of the high rollers at the casino. So what was the reason behind the slots becoming the most beneficial game in the casino? Who was its inventor? And how it got where it is at present?

The slot machine is a fresh addition to the casino, which already consists of games such as blackjack and roulette. The first ever slot machine was invented in the year 1887 by a person called Charles Fay. Charles Fey was originally from Germany and later emigrated to United States of America in his early years. He settled down in New Jersey. Fey was a tool foreman in Germany and learnt most of the skills he needed to construct the first slot machine from his occupation only.

The slot machines are also known as The One Armed Bandit. This name was given to the slot machines because the players had to put a metal called nickel into these slots and then used to pull a bulky metal rod to roll the reels. The name bandit was used because the casino owners used to fix machines to avoid payouts of huge bonuses and control the rate of the payouts of the machines, ultimately maximizing their earnings. As a result gambling laws were created in order to prevent and keep a check on all these malpractice.

In the year 1907 Fey joined hands with a company called Mills novelty. After the two came in contact with each other they went on and created many different designs with the addition of features such as themed and double jackpots machines. But the principle of operation of all these machines was same i.e. pulling a metal lever in order to spin the reels and paying consumers who obtained definite combinations.

The slots became popular in the early 1940’s. Over the years the slots have become more technical and advanced. These days most of the slot machines are completely computerized. These machines have their results based on and generated by the Random Number Generators (RNG). The beginning of the online casinos has opened yet another spot for the slot machines to grow. Due to the lesser operating costs of an online edition of a casino; the online slots have much-improved payouts in comparison to its land-based equivalent.

Did you know that …

... the first mechanical slot machine was the Liberty Bell, invented in 1895 by car mechanic, Charles Fey (1862-1944) of San Francisco?

The Liberty Bell slot machine had three spinning reels. Diamond, spade, and heart symbols were painted around each reel, plus the image of a cracked Liberty Bell. A spin resulting in three Liberty Bells in a row gave the biggest payoff, a grand total of fifty cents or ten nickels.

The original Liberty Bell slot machine can still be seen at the Liberty Belle Saloon & Restaurant in Reno, Nevada.
