The world of professional poker has a reputation as being a man’s sport, with its aggressive playing strategies and need for pure logic. However, there is no reason why women cannot excel at the sport on the world stage, and a number of women are currently giving men a run for their money in international tournaments.

One female poker player who has beaten many men is Susie Isaacs, a professional player who was born in Nashville, Tennessee. She has been placed highly in or won many prizes, including a world title in 1998 and two World Series Poker bracelets. Ms Isaacs now lives in Las Vegas, which allows her to dedicate large amounts of time to her sport. She is best known for writing for magazines and websites, her articles focusing on poker, and it is because of this vocation that she is now probably one of the most famous females in the poker industry, worldwide.

Another extremely successful female poker player is Jennifer Harmon, a graduate who was born in Reno, Nevada, and still lives there today. Jennifer Harmon is considered an extremely fierce competitor. Possibly a reason for this is that she grew up in the casino capital of the world, and has been surrounded by it from a very young age. She is considered to be one of the best poker players in the world, and without a doubt the best female: in the past her winnings from just one match have totalled almost two million dollars, a staggering amount.

Annie Duke is a female poker player who appears able to defeat almost anyone -including the nine men that she beat in the World Series Poker championship in 2004. As well as holding a masters degree from Columbia University and having a large family, Ms Duke is rapidly building her way up in the poker leagues. She has won the most amount of money in championships out of any woman, and whilst nine months pregnant was placed in the top ten in the World Series Poker championship in 2000.

Did you know that …

... the first mechanical slot machine was the Liberty Bell, invented in 1895 by car mechanic, Charles Fey (1862-1944) of San Francisco?

The Liberty Bell slot machine had three spinning reels. Diamond, spade, and heart symbols were painted around each reel, plus the image of a cracked Liberty Bell. A spin resulting in three Liberty Bells in a row gave the biggest payoff, a grand total of fifty cents or ten nickels.

The original Liberty Bell slot machine can still be seen at the Liberty Belle Saloon & Restaurant in Reno, Nevada.
